Quantum dots are an intriguing area in the field of liquid crystal display materials technology. Companies are reporting good results with these semiconductor materials in terms of color gamut and efficiency, with QD Vision, Quantum Materials and Nanosys among the industry leaders. Nanosys is working with AUO Optronics and 3M, among others, and recently received a new investment from Samsung Venture Investment Corporation. Quantum Materials is developing new quantum dot materials, which it can potentially inkjet.
QD Vision has had numerous successes in this field, most recently collaborations with Philips and Hisense. Investors are taking notice: QD Vision just announced a new round of investment, with Tsing Capital, a leading Chinese cleantech venture capital firm, and BASF Venture Capital. The nearly $22 million in new financing go to intellectual property and supporting the company’s growth. BASF Group will also work with QD Vision on a quantum dot-enhanced backlight and color filter for LCD displays.
Seeing companies such as BASF, Samsung, Philips, AUO Optronics, Tsing Capital, Hisense and 3M reaffirms that there is indeed promise in the quantum dot arena.
