The City of Arcadia is a community of more than 56,000 people. Although part of the bustling San Gabriel Valley area of Los Angeles County, until recently Arcadia could only monitor traffic flow conditions through field observations or manage its traffic signals by directly accessing the controller cabinets.
In addition to typical congestion for a city its size, Arcadia’s traffic was compounded by nearby activity centers, including the Santa Anita Race Track, the L.A. Arboretum, the Santa Anita Mall and Methodist Hospital.
To address increased congestion in the area, in 2005 the city developed an ITS Master Plan to integrate its traffic signal operations with the LA County Information Exchange, and participate in the San Gabriel Valley Traffic Forum project.
In 2006, the city selected Transcore TransSuite to deploy its traffic management system, and in 2007 their system went live using the TransSuite traffic control software. Initially, the system used predetermined timing plans with fixed daily schedules. Over the years the city has expanded the system to utilize additional technologies and operational strategies, such as traffic responsive signal operations.
In 2014, the city started a project to implement adaptive signal operations. KLD’s adaptive control system, ACDSS, was integrated with the TransSuite software and new McCain controllers and firmware deployed at 33 intersections.
The adaptive system started going live in February in multiple locations and is addressing traffic pattern variations due to local events and is minimizing delays.
