As we proceed through 2024, printed and flexible electronics continues to be an emerging field, although it isn’t reaching the expectations that were hoisted upon it in the early years. What has been interesting is that while some of the early opportunities have fallen by the wayside – outdoor photovoltaics come to mind – new markets, such as indoor photovoltaics being used to power sensors for the Internet of Things, have emerged.
The flexible and printed electronics segment covers many different possibilities. The opportunities developed through flexible hybrid electronics, where the best of silicon and printed electronics are combined, is one such bright spot. Sensors and wearables, in-mold electronics, printed batteries, displays, printed solar cells, smart packaging and more have been developed for a range of industries, including automotive, healthcare and so much more.
